Stealing Cthulhu
I'm close to starting a new roleplaying campaign, and was hoping to run a Lovecraft-themed game. There are many roleplaying game systems out there, and Jason just told me about one over on indiegogo.com, Stealing Cthulhu. Not just a rules system, Graham Walmsley apparently has put together a guide to how to run Lovecraftian scenarios.
I like it, running a good Lovecraft game is definitely more than just rules. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm too late. :/

Check it out, if it appeals to you, hopefully you can buy it at some point. Or tell me how to buy it. ;)
The system I'm going to use for my campaign is actually going to be Nemesis, a fantastic game I've already run a game in once, and plan to run games in the future. Hopefully I'll have a future post soon covering Nemesis!
Mansions of Madness
I'm so excited. Getting my copy of Mansions of Madness any day now.
It looks pretty cool. I definitely plan on hosting a game soon after I get it. Have you played it yet?
Here it is on Amazon if you haven't checked it out, theres an awesome video if you click on the picture.
Happy Holidays!
Happy holidays everyone! My wife made these cthulhu ornaments so I thought I'd share

Dark Mythos Contest Update
IMPORTANT! Email photos to me at rmathis (at) webcomic.net for the contest!
Some more updates have been coming in, I'm going to start posting the pictures here.
Here is a sample

This is some great stuff, many more after the click. I'll be updating it as more pictures come in.
Remember, there are 2 copies of Arkham Horror I'm giving out, pictures, tweeting, and clicking "Like" on the FB relevant contest post are all ways to enter. :)
Update! A few more images I put up today and over the weekend, check them out!
Miskatonic Andrew
Andrew linked us to a pic of himself when he was in Miskatonic University (or somewhere in Arkham), check it out: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=21400&l=12edc4f6c0&id=1676202849
Andrew was lucky enough to already have this pic, but I'm still looking forward to more pics like this from other users. Who knows, maybe we can create an entire virtual town worth of pictures populated with all of us Lovecraft fans.
Of course alternatively, maybe a few special effects people can show off their first encounter with a shoggoth (and hopefully their last, not too many people get more than one), byakhee, or even a deep one. o_O
Dark Monday: Another Monday, another contest!
We've been doing a few different contests here, so I thought we'd do another one. This one is going to be a bit different, its a photo contest.
Because a photo contest is more work, the prize is bigger as well. A copy of Arkham Horror, the board game by Fantasy Flight Games! Actually two.
How does it work? We're giving each person up to two entries into the contest.
-
The first entry is for a photo. Send a photo of yourself as if you were in a Lovecraftian situation. Dress up like a 1920s professor, a 1920s librarian, or photoshop yourself as someone from modern times that has been sucked into a Lovecraft story being attacked by a tentacled horror! The only restriction is that I should be somewhat able to tell who you are...though you might be in the midst of tranforming into some sort of sea creature! Have fun with it, then send it over to me via rmathis (_at_) webcomic (dot)net.
-
The second entry, like our other contests, just share the word via twitter and FB. Each person who tweets about the contest including a link and the hashtag #DMArkhamContest or clicks the Like button on the facebook post (here) about the contest gets an entry into the contest.
I'm going to give people plenty of time for this contest, so I'll be announcing the winner on December 13th (IMPORTANT I've changed the date to December 17th). I'll be sending one copy of the game to the best picture, and another copy of the game to a randomly selected person from the people who participates by promoting the contest. If you come up with a unique way of promoting the contest, I'll give you another entry (you'll count twice).
ALSO, I'll be giving out random swag to people who entry, depending on the amount of effort they put into their entry or promotion of the contest.
My hope is to get the game to the winners before Christmas so you can spend Christmas Eve the right way, by defending it against the Ancient Ones who plan our destruction! o_O
UPDATE: To give people enough time to create their artwork, I've pushed the date back to the 17th.
*Submitting a photo to us will, of course, be giving us permission to post that photo in facebook, twitter, and on darkmythos.com. We want to share the coolness!
Contest #2 Win a copy of Space Hulk: Death Angel
I have 2 more copies of the game left, after I rewarded Jason a copy for doing the awesome logo for this site and the one I kept so I can eventually write a review, so I'm giving them out!
This one is easy, go to the facebook page, click Like on the 2nd contest and you're entered! Next Tuesday I'll pick two winners from the list. If you want a 2nd entry into the contest, just tweet this message
Help purge the Xenos Threat, win a copy of Death Angel at http://darkmythos.com #DAContest @topwebcomics #RT2Enter
Ok everyone, I look forward to sending out 2 more copies of the game. Oh just a heads up, due to one of the winners being in Poland last contest and the expense and hassle of sending the game, if you're in another country, I'm probably going to either send the game as a gift from Amazon or just send a gift card or something, it seems silly to spend more on shipping than the value of the game itself. Don't worry, we'll work it out. I just wanted to assuage any concerns that you couldn't win if you were in another country, all fans are equal opportunity citizens in my opinion, regardless of country origin.
Update: Originally I said click Share. Apparently the Share button is only available to me, the creator of the wall post, and the share button, being out of fashion on FB, is no longer used. Good enough, now that I know, I've updated the contest.
Halloween Arkham Horror
We played Arkham Horror during Halloween. We had gone out to haunted houses the Friday before, so we were pretty happy to get some Arkham Horror on for game. The Ancient One we faced was Shudde M'ell, who we had never faced before. We chose not to have the Lurker in the Threshold this game because honestly it seems to make the game too easy.
Game concluded in 2 hours for 5 players, probably one of the shortest games we've ever had. We had a monster surge that closed down the church (Shudde M'ell closes down locations permanently each time there is a monster surge), then we had a number of "add 2 doom tokens". Combine that with the fact that we had the dreamwalker guy who starts out in the dreamlands with the gate box, and we closed all of the portals ASAP. Kinda disappointing to be honest, I was hoping to have Arkham Horror destroyed.
We decided to fight Shudde M'ell anyways, just to see how it would have gone. I was playing the martial artist, my wife was playing the cook, which allowed both of us to ignore Shudde M'ell's physical and magical resistance. Consequentially we destroyed Shudde M'ell with 2 rubble tokens left. Sure most of Arkham was reduced to rubble, worse for our coming? or...better? ;)
It was a good night, with so much free time afterward, we then switched to the cooperative board game Ravenloft. Its cooperative, D&D-based, and made by the folks at Wizards of the Coast... Then why isn't it better? I find it to be a very disappointing game. I was expecting a worthy competitor for Arkham Horror, and there is some of it that seems inspired by what is my favorite board game, but overall, its clunky, and doesn't feel smooth. I keep reading through the manual wondering if I missed something. And honestly, the lack of support or mention on wizards.com since its release means, to me, that it is probably a failure, I guess we'll see if the 2nd game in the same series gets released.
Contest Concluded!
Ok everyone, the contest is done, results are here. It was cool, to see some participation. I think I have a big prize to give out next month, I'll have to figure out something zanier to do than just promoting the site.
Thanks everyone who participated. :)
